MEDICAL REFERENCE ARTICLE: WENDLER GLOTOPLASTY AND LOGOPODIC TREATMENT FOR VOICE FEMINIZATION

Dr. Juan Carlos Casado Morente has published the first Spanish language article of voice feminization in the journal Acta Española de Otorrinolaringología, official organ of the Spanish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and cervico-facial pathology and the Ibero-American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology.

PREVIOUS STUDIES BEFORE THE PROCESS OF VOICE FEMINIZATION

For this study previously performed Surgery, the anatomy of the larynx will be recorded and a complete study of the voice will be performed. This study includes:

  • A perceptual exploration.
  • An aerodynamic exploration.
  • A stroboscopic exploration of the larynx.
  • An acoustic-Spectrographic examination.

Also, the voice will be recorded while speaking (reading of a phonetically balanced text).
RESULTS OBJECTIVES AFTER THE PROCESS OF VOICE FEMINIZATION.
In this article, a comparison of the results obtained in 10 transgender women was performed, which has been feminized their voice by surgery (Wendler’s Glotoplasty) + postoperative speech therapy.

The surgical procedure consisted of a deepithelialization of the one-third portion of both vocal cords, suture of the deepithelialized zone and vaporization of the upper face of both vocal cords with laser diode.

Once these women have completed the surgery of their vocal cords, and after the compulsory vocal rest, it is convenient to do speech therapy rehabilitation to strengthen what has been achieved with surgery.

The sessions on voice feminization mainly focuses on the exercise of the following elements: The relaxation, the blow, the respiration, and the posture… The vocal work is mainly based on singing exercises and the joint application of various voice techniques.

After the complementary postoperative speech therapy, the voice change, in particular the increase of vocal tone and exacerbation of the voice after the process of voice feminization is demonstrated in an objective and clear way.

In this article, written jointly with the professor of the degree of speech therapy, attached to the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Málaga, José A. Adrián and with our speech therapist María Soledad Angulo, the results confirm that this surgical procedure together with postoperative speech pathology is a magnificent method for voice feminization.
