DOCTOR JUAN CARLOS CASADO MORENTE HAS PUBLISHED AN ARTICLE OF VOICE FEMINIZATION IN A PRESTIGIOUS EUROPEAN JOURNAL

The prestigious magazine EUROPEAN ARCHIVES OF OTO-RHINOLARYNGOLOGY AND HEAD & NECK has accepted the publication of an article written by Dr. Juan Carlos Casado Morente. This article discusses the esults on the process of voice feminization in 18 transgender women by surgical technique Glotoplastia Wendler, with personal modifications, plus postoperative speech therapy.

The work was done together with the speech therapy degree of the University of Málaga and the University of Granada (section Ceuta).

HOW THIS VOICE FEMINIZATION STUDY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the mid-term outcomes of Wendler’s Glotoplasty surgery and the effects of postoperative voice therapy in a group of transgender women; 18 were those who voluntarily underwent this study between 2010 and 2014 in one hospital. Ten of them underwent additional voice therapy training for the treatment of voice feminization.

The group was evaluated before and after treatments, taking into account the fundamental frequency, the maximum phonation time, the results of the self-evaluation questionnaire (TSEQ) and voice evaluation (visual analog scale and a version of the Hirano scale – GRBAS Classical) by agreement between evaluators.

SURGERY AND VOICE THERAPY FOR THE TREATMENT OF VOICE FEMINIZATION

The surgical procedure consisted of the deepithelialization of the one third portion of both vocal cords; This area was sutured and the surface of both vocal cords was vaporized with laser diode.

The results showed a significant increase of the vocal tone and as a consequence a feminization of the voice, voices perceived as stereotypically feminine, in all participants; Including a significant increase 12 months after treatment.

The use of voice therapy is a decisive element for optimum and satisfactory improvement in this procedure.

As a conclusion to this study, we can say that this surgical technique (Wendler’s Glotoplasty) plus postoperative vocal therapy is a more effective procedure for the process voice feminization.
